Homework 1
Due Monday April 25 at 11:59 PM by email to the course email in PDF format (one file only). Worth 10%.
- Download the ABA Accessibility Standard Guidelines and scan through it.
- Take pictures of 5 violations to these guidelines at UCSC or in Santa Cruz in general.
- Create a Word doc. For each violation:
- Cite the actual guideline.
- Paste your picture and describe the location (e.g., "Companion Bakery, 2341 Mission street, Santa Cruz CA 95060" or "third floor of UCSC multi story parking structure").
- State why that particular structure/facility/arrangement violates the guideline you cite.
- Suggest improvements to make it compliant to the guideline.
Homework 2
Due Monday May 2 at 11:59 PM by email to the course email in PDF format (one file only). Worth 10%.
- I would like you to employ a technique which is called "A Day in the Life". This is a technique where you catalog activities & contexts that a person experiences throughout an entire day. I would like you to experience one day (from waking up to going to sleep that night) of being blind, being illiterate, being deaf, or being in a wheelchair (but without actually using a wheelchair unless you wish to and have access to one). Please think carefully of the logistic. For example, if you choose to experience being blind, you will most likely need to have a companion with you all the time. Try not to disrupt the public, though, so for example, if you choose to experience being in a wheelchair (but without being in a wheelchair), don't tell the bus driver to lower the ramp. Also, please try not to endanger yourself and people around you.
- Do photo journalism. Report all accessibility barriers specific to your situation in a series of photos. For each photo, just like in Homework 1, explain the location, what your problem is, and how to fix it. I expect at least 10 photos spread throughout the day (that averages 1 every hour).
- Create a Word doc and save as PDF.
Homework 3
Due Monday May 30 at 11:59 PM by email to the course email in "presentation" format (one file only). Worth 10%.
- The homework is about DSM-5. Download this PDF (or just read it online) but focus on the section you are supposed to work on. The section you are supposed to work on can be found in the PDF document at the bottom of this page. However, you need to complement this reading with other Internet/library searches.
- I would like you to create a set of slides (PowerPoint or Keynote or any other presentation suite such as OpenOffice Impress). The slides must include:
- The definition, diagnosis and management/treatment options for the umbrella disorder you are focusing on. So for example, one umbrella disorder in DSM-5 is "Other Mental Disorders" (p. 707).
- The definition of the sub-categories of the umbrella disorder you are working on. In my example, that would be: "other specified mental disorder due to another medical condition; unspecified mental disorder due to another medical condition; other specified mental disorder; and unspecified mental disorder"
- Links to 3 YouTube movies (or any other publicly available Internet movies such as Vimeo, Ted, etc) about 3 different sub-categories of the umbrella disorder you are working on. For each of those links, please choose a movie that provides "reliable information." Please report the number of viewers, the source of the movie, the quality of the movie, and the quality of the closed caption. Please write a set of bullet points summarizing what the movie is about.
Point Makeup - Homework
Due Friday June 3 at 11:59 PM by email to the course email in in PDF format (one file only). Worth 10%.
- I need you to find 5 lawsuits from reliable sources (news website such as CNN, NY Times, etc) from 5 different Disability Rights Laws.
- For each of the lawsuit, include the URL of the news itself, and summarize with the following information:
- Who vs. who?
- Where and when?
- What's the allegation?
- What's the outcome?
- If the outcome is against the person(s) with disability, analyze why that is.
